NRC is a dynamic and vibrant organization that, in its ongoing evolution is seeking two Research Officers with proven skills in advanced machine learning as applied to natural language processing, machine translation, or computer images/vision. The candidates will work closely with other researchers applying Machine Learning to those fields. Activities of these Research Officers include developing novel methods or applying existing methods to problems in the above areas, and publishing the results. Duties could also include providing machine learning consultancy support to NRC clients and helping develop new business initiatives.
Screening criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or related disciplines.
Experience
Significant experience in advanced machine learning research or demonstrated success in the effective application of machine learning to practical or competition problems.
Significant experience in at least two of the following: deep neural networks, large-scale machine learning, structured prediction, learning with latent variables, semi-supervised learning, or unsupervised learning.
Significant experience in applications of machine learning to natural language processing, machine translation, modeling of mechanical systems, biological systems, or images/vision.
Significant experience in the written and oral reporting of scientific work in machine learning.

Equivalency
Master’s degree in engineering with extensive experience in advanced machine learning techniques.

Assessment criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical competencies:
Superior knowledge of machine learning with strengths in two or more of the following areas: deep neural networks, large-scale machine learning, structured prediction, learning with latent variables, semi-supervised learning, or unsupervised learning.
Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following: natural language processing, machine translation, speech processing, images/vision, modeling of mechanical systems, modeling of biological systems or modeling of sequential data.
Solid knowledge of graphical models and machine learning.
Ability to build learning models for applications.
Ability to work on a project in both an independent fashion and in a team environment and to bring it to a successful conclusion (as evidenced by a record of achievements).

Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC’s directives.
Salary range
These positions are classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $38,921 to $125,067 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions. In addition, an incumbent occupying a position within the RO Groups is currently entitled to receive a terminable allowance of $8,000 per year.
